How
can I help?
|
"Come on wattle soldiers, wildlife
warriors get angry. They'll call you
green, they'll call you red, stay
strong and turn your head."
- lyrics from Wildlife Warriors,
It's Time by John Williamson.

There are many people
who have now realized that the earth is a fragile
place. As citizens of this blue planet, we have a
responsibility to care for our environment and
fellow inhabitants. Gone are the days of unchecked,
wanton environmental destruction in the name of
development and profit.
How can you help our
wallabies? Well, here are a few suggestions:-
-
When driving
between dawn and dusk, be "wildlife wary"
particularly on deserted roads. Slow down and
observe. This simple action could save your life
as well as that of an animal.
-
If you see a dead
wallaby on the road, stop to check if it has a
pouch with a Joey. You may save a Joey's life by
doing this. Always put your safety first when
near busy roads.
-
Join an
organisation like
FNQ Wildlife Rescue. Even if you cannot be a
carer, your support would be welcomed in many
other ways.
-
Why not
become a wildlife carer? There are plenty of
willing mentors!
-
Make your house
and yard wildlife friendly by planting native
trees and shrubs. These are generally more
climate tolerant and will also encourage
wildlife.
-
Reduce your
carbon footprint by switching off electrical
appliances when not in use or walking instead of
using the car.
-
Contact your
local councillor or State representative and
voice your concerns about the lack of
conservation parks and encourage them to seek
funding to preserve our habitats.
And the list goes
on....
Human Beings were not
put on this planet to subjugate all other species.
We are merely one thread in the web of life. We
would be very naive to think that continued
environmental destruction goes without consequences.
Mother Earth always finds a way to correct
imbalances. What are we heading towards? What legacy
are we leaving for our children? |
